Chislehurst & West Kent Cricket ClubThe cricket ground of Chislehurst and West Kent Cricket Club was created from 8 acres of Chislehurst Common, that was given to the club by the Lord of the Manor of Chislehurst. The first game took place on 20th July 1822. 178 years later cricket is still being played on the same ground. It is one of the oldest grounds in southern England. In 1876, three small local clubs amalgamated and called themselves the Chislehurst Cricket Club. They approached West Kent Cricket Club to ask permission to play some of their fixtures on Chislehurst Common. Chislehurst Cricket Club agreed to this and this shared agreement continued for the next 100 years. In the 1880s, an Act of Parliament gave Chislehurst Common over to the people of Chislehurst with the proviso that cricket be played there forever, thus protecting Chislehurst Common from building development in the future. Over the years many famous cricketers have played at the ground on Chislehurst Common. WG Grace made several appearances there and when he retired he came to live close by. His house is now a private nursing home. The Cricket Pavilion was erected in 1899 and is still in use today. Unfortunately West Kent Cricket Club suffered declining membership and the club was dissolved in 1980. Chislehurst, now known as the Chislehurst and West Kent Cricket Club, now has sole use of the ground.
